This four-day intensive workshop will orient both the novice and expert bird manager to the finer points of caring for and maintaining captive raptors for educational purposes.
Highlights include:
- Hands-on learning with our expert staff in our internationally renowned clinic
- Work with live education raptors and the staff of our education department
- Meet clinic veterinarians, including Dr. Pat Redig
- Enjoy optional evening workshops and field trips guided by The Raptor Center staff
This workshop is four full days, with each day starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. Continental breakfast and lunch are included. Please note special dietary restrictions when registering.

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008
- The law: the necessary permits
- Introduction to operant conditioning
- Considerations when selecting a rehabilitated bird for education
- Basics of handling raptors for education programs
Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008
- Advanced raptor anatomy and physiology (hands-on)
- Basic raptor medical care (hands-on)
- Emergency raptor medical care (hands-on)
- Raptor diet selection, storage, and preparation
- Behavioral training techniques for education birds
Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008
- Raptor handling 101 perching, crating, and transportation (hands-on)
- Utilizing medical skills restraining raptors, basic exam procedures, and weight assessment (clinic hands-on)
- Raptor housing: a review of specific considerations in design
- Managing raptor health and well-being: coping/trimming/physical checks (hands-on)
Friday, Oct. 24, 2008
- Utilizing medical skills: basic bandaging, coping, and administering fluids (clinic hands-on)
- Raptor handling-techniques for handling education raptors in programs, bird escapes, and more
- Free-flight demonstration
Optional evening programs
Topics include biofact preparation and equipment making and application.

Cancellations
If you cancel earlier than 10 days before the workshop, you will receive a refund, minus a $55 cancellation fee. If you cancel within 10 days of the workshop, you will receive a 50-percent refund. No refunds for failure to attend without notification.
