Professional Opportunities and Externships



Externships in Raptor and Avian Medicine

The Raptor Center offers three-to-six-week externships for senior veterinary students and veterinarians. Externs are responsible for assisting the residensts and senior clinicians in diagnosis and surgical/medical treatment of raptors and other birds admitted to the clinic. The caseload is approximately 850 cases a year.

During a typical externship, the following subjects are covered: restraint, handling and captive management of raptors, bandaging techniques, anesthesia, surgery, treatment protocols, radiology, endoscopy, necropsy and laboratory procedures. Duties include the completion of a supervised research project.

Application should include a cover letter stating purposes for applying to this program, a resume, two letters of recommendation, and requested dates to:
